Music & the Arts
The Choirs of Centenary
It is the mission of the Centenary Choirs to joyfully lead and facilitate each worshipper’s encounter with Christ Jesus by singing well-crafted music with great theological integrity. It is dependent upon an earnest commitment and active participation in an environment of mutual love and respect as a family of faithful friends devoted to serving God in Christ, Centenary United Methodist Church and one another.
Music & the Arts Committee
This committee meets once a month and helps organize lots of different music and arts events throughout the entire year, focusing primarily on programs that bring the arts more fully into the life of the church. These programs and activities present opportunities for spiritual growth through instruction in the arts, lead us towards growth of the mind, heart, & spirit, and move us toward healing, transformation and redemption. The programs and activities cover areas in the performing arts, visual arts, the written word, film & cinema, and much more. Ranging from concerts to lectures to workshops to film series these programs offer opportunities for service in and enjoyment of the creative spirit, of which God is the fountainhead. If you’d like more information on how you can get involved please contact Sheila Brame.
The Organ of Centenary
The beautiful pipe organ of Centenary was designed for the newly constructed sanctuary and installed in 1931. Built by the Austin Organ Company of Hartford, Connecticut, a premiere organ building firm of the time, it was refurbished in 1963 and received new additions in 1987 and 1989 as well as in 2010 with a new console and solid state system. Composed of four manuals with pedals, 51 stops, and 3209 pipes, this majestic instrument is heard in glorious worship and inspiring concerts, resounding to the glory of God through vast arrays of sounds, from the ethereal beauty of strings, the gentleness of flutes, vibrant organ choruses, and powerful reeds such as the trumpet en chamade which extends into the choir loft space.
