DAYBreak Respite Care is offered on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday of each week from 10 am to 3 pm. The respite program relieves caregivers during these times by providing a setting in which older adults can engage in a safe, structured program of activities, music, exercise, and social interaction..
A Typical Day
Participants, volunteers and staff gather for coffee, snacks and "social hour" at 10 am. The morning session includes a daily devotional, exercise, and discussion of current events. Lunch is served at noon. After lunch the group is involved in a structured activity for about an hour. (Sample activities include working on craft or art projects, doing volunteer work, gardening, cooking, playing games, or enjoying presentations by guest speakers.) The day ends with the singing of favorite songs from 2:30 pm to 3 pm.
Benefits to Caregivers
DAYBreak respite care provides "time off" from care giving responsibilities. A monthly caregiver group (held the first Thursday of each month from 10 am to 11 am) provides additional information, resource and referral assistance, and practical support.
Benefits to Participants
DAYBreak respite care provides opportunities for success in a safe and welcoming environment. The program engages participants in meaningful and enjoyable social, recreational and physical activities. The DAYBreak group is small (8-10 individuals), so each participant has the benefit of special attention and support. Participants are encouraged to use and share their special gifts and talents.
Benefits to Volunteers and Staff
DAYBreak respite care provides an opportunity to use and develop spiritual gifts, and to serve in a ministry that has immediate and positive impact on individuals and their families.
Giving a Good Day
The simple goal of DAYBreak is to "give a good day" to everyone who is touched by this ministry. Family members trust that they are leaving their loved ones in a safe and caring environment. "I don't worry when my husband is at DAYBreak," one participant's wife said. When participants leave DAYBreak, they have had a good day of friendship, laughter, meaningful engagement, and therapeutic activity. Said one of the DAYBreak participants: "This is the first time I've laughed since I came to my son's home."
